Week 2

I’m starting to think that less is more when it comes to crosshatching the images I’m drawing. I also really like heavy outlines, most likely due to habit from printmaking. It’s not exactly what is being taught thought all the tutorials I’ve been watching, but I think it looks better.

I drew some birds from a 16th or 17th century emblem book that I may revisit in the future. When it comes to my preferred style, it’s always going to be “shitty” woodcuts from Medieval/Renaissance Europe. Old playing cards, mass produced when the printing press got up and running, have a real charm to them. The Devil from the Rosenwald Tarot looks he’s ready to give you a hug rather than stick you with a pitchfork.

I’ve only had one day so far where I haven’t really had much time to sketch. I ended up brainstorm-doodling a potential Tarot card for any upcoming art show I’m co-hosting in April. Solidifying that idea will depend on if I can finish my main piece which has been sitting on the woodblock for over a month.
